Photos by Sumio Yamada

July 27, 2008 - In a fight of the year candidate, Mexican Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KOs) knocked out previously unbeaten Miguel Cotto from Puerto Rico on Saturday at the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas to become the new WBA Welterweight champion.

In a epic battle that for sure live it to the high expectations, Cotto dominated the first half of the bout with a brilliant performance as he outboxed Margarito using all his skills and speed.

However, from the seventh round on the Mexican proved why many stars in the business ducked him for years as he put a tremendous pressure on Cotto that the latter could not stand.

Margarito hurted Cotto in the seventh and ultimately battered him in the tenth and eleventh. Eventually, a bleeding Cotto took a knee twice what led his corner to threw the towel in.
